Space to Spread Out — Inside and Out

Some homes make you choose between room to live and a yard to enjoy. This one doesn't. Set on a level, fully fenced third of an acre in a quiet pocket of north Dupo, 2024 Diane Drive offers 2,400 square feet of finished living space and four bedrooms — with open ground behind the property instead of a neighbor's back window.

A Welcoming Main Level

A decorative front door with sidelight panels opens onto a classic split-foyer staircase with solid wood treads and a handsome spindled rail. Upstairs, the living room stretches out beneath a large picture window trimmed in decorative millwork, filling the space with afternoon light.

The dining area flows directly from the living room and opens through French doors onto the back deck — an easy handoff from dinner table to evening outside. Alongside it, the eat-in kitchen offers ceramic tile flooring, a decorative tile backsplash, and generous cabinetry with room to work. Every appliance stays with the home, washer and dryer included.

Two bedrooms and both full baths sit down the main hallway. The hall bath offers a large vanity and tub-shower combination. At the end of the hall, the primary bedroom opens up with a walk-in closet, a quiet sitting area, and a private bath featuring a jetted whirlpool tub.

A Lower Level That Actually Lives Like One

This is where the home separates itself from others in its range. The walk-up lower level is fully finished and genuinely usable — not an afterthought.

A large family room sits at the front of the house beneath a wide daylight window. A second living space beside it works just as easily as a media room, study, or den. Two more bedrooms follow, each with a large egress window and a roomy closet.

At the end of the level, a tiled bonus room with a bay window sits right off the garage entry — the ideal spot to kick off snowy boots, or to set up a home office with real natural light. Laundry with a scrub sink and generous under-stair storage complete the space.

The Backyard Is the Selling Point

Step out the dining room's French doors onto an upper deck, down to a second larger deck, and then onto a patio that runs nearly the full width of the house and continues over toward the garage. Beyond it, a concrete pad with a basketball goal is ready for a game.

Mature trees throw real shade across the lawn. A storage shed with a roll-up overhead door — about five years old — handles the mower and the seasonal gear. And with nothing built behind the property, the yard feels considerably bigger than its dimensions suggest.

A Garage Worth Mentioning

The attached two-car garage is oversized, with interior access down to the lower level and a service door at the rear. Better still, a second single overhead door at the back lets you drive straight through into the backyard — a feature you rarely find, and one that trailer, mower, and project owners will appreciate immediately.

Solid Bones, Sensible Costs

The architectural shingle roof is approximately 10 years old and the carpet approximately five. Insulated double-hung windows throughout, central air, forced air heat, and 200-amp electrical service. And...there's no HOA.

The Location

North Dupo is a quiet, low-traffic corner of town — only a few streets, with little reason for anyone to pass through. It stays peaceful without stranding you: I-255 is close by, and crossing the JB Bridge puts you into the St. Louis metro area in a matter of minutes. Dupo District 196 schools serve the neighborhood.

Quiet where you live. Connected where you need to be.

Welcome to Dupo, Illinois

Tucked between the Mississippi River bluffs and the wide floodplain below, Dupo sits just nine miles from downtown St. Louis—close enough for a weeknight ballgame, quiet enough that most of the metro drives right past. It is one of the oldest continuously settled spots in Illinois, and one of the region’s best-kept commuting secrets.

A town with two beginnings

Dupo’s history runs deeper than almost anywhere else in Illinois—and it starts long before the village did. During the Mississippian era this ground held one of several multi-mound communities in the floodplain near Cahokia, and some of those mounds were still standing as recently as 1915.

The European chapter opened around 1750, when families moved out of Cahokia and settled at a bridge over what is now Prairie du Pont Creek. They called the place Prairie du Pont—“Bridge Prairie.” It sat along the trail from Cahokia to Kaskaskia, the first wagon road in Illinois, and the site was chosen partly because the ground here rises ten to twelve feet above Cahokia, offering better footing when the Mississippi ran high. By 1765, fourteen families were living there.

Then the railroad arrived and changed everything. The town was platted in 1905 as the Missouri Pacific Railroad consolidated operations here, and the village incorporated on August 5, 1907. The rail yard complex opened in 1910, and a quiet farming settlement became a boomtown nearly overnight. That yard is still running today under Union Pacific, which named Dupo to its Train Town USA Registry in 2012.

Railroad executives wanted something shorter than “Prairie du Pont” for the new town. A local resident named Louis Dyroff suggested trimming it down to Dupo—and more than a century later, it stuck.

Close to everything, quiet at home

Geography is Dupo’s most practical argument. The I-255 interchange is minutes away, and the JB Bridge—officially the Jefferson Barracks Memorial Arch Bridge—carries you across the Mississippi and into south St. Louis County in a matter of minutes.

Head south on IL-3 and you reach Columbia and Waterloo. Head east and you have Belleville and Scott Air Force Base. Head north and downtown St. Louis, Busch Stadium, and the Arch grounds are a short drive. It is metro access without metro density—or metro pricing.

  • Downtown St. Louis — about 9–10 miles
  • I-255 interchange — minutes from town
  • JB Bridge to south St. Louis County
  • Columbia & Waterloo — south via IL-3
  • Belleville & Scott AFB — east
  • St. Louis Downtown Airport — just north

Parks, bluffs, and open ground

Dupo Community Park is the center of village life—roughly fourteen acres with seven pavilions, two playgrounds, a splash pad, walking paths, a ball field, picnic tables and grills, and restrooms. Through the warm months it hosts summer movies and the annual fireworks show.

East of town the Mississippi River bluffs rise straight out of the floodplain, and this is where the landscape turns genuinely dramatic. Falling Springs—a spring that pours from the face of the bluff well above its base—has drawn attention since at least 1841, when the artist J.C. Wild sketched it for a book on the Mississippi Valley. Across the river sit Cliff Cave County Park and Jefferson Barracks Park, and a short drive north brings you to Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico.

Schools

Dupo is served by Dupo Community Unit School District 196, a compact district of three schools—Bluffview Elementary, Dupo Junior High, and Dupo High School—serving roughly a thousand students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Bluffview opened its current building in 2000. The teams play as the Tigers, and the high school’s Air Force JROTC unit has been part of the school for over thirty years. Buyers are encouraged to review current district information directly and confirm attendance boundaries with the district.

Everyday life

Dupo keeps the basics close—local restaurants and taverns, village-run water and gas service, ballfields, and churches that have stood here for generations. For a full grocery run or a big-box trip, Columbia is minutes south and south St. Louis County is right across the bridge. It is the arrangement a lot of buyers are after: a quiet street to come home to, with everything else within easy reach.

Community information is provided for general reference, is deemed reliable but not guaranteed, and may change over time. Buyers should independently verify school district boundaries, municipal services, and any details material to their purchase decision.
